An intriguing renewal and they were soon well strung out, the well-backed Cowardofthecounty disappointing but one who he'd finished in front of at Royal Ascot and the once-raced favourite led them home, Babouche made to work much harder this time but remaining a top prospect.

Camille Pissarro had been caught on the wrong side when sent off favourite in the Coventry and got back on the up under a change of tactics, shaping well in defeat behind a very good prospect, taking the eye with the amount of ground he made up on the opposite wing to the winner.

He represents a yard that typically has an embarrassment of riches in this division and he could be one for the Gimcrack at York next month, this effort likely to have put him among the leading contenders.

Battle Queen was unable to reward favouritism in the fillies' handicap at Newbury but she again shaped well and underlined that she's on a good mark.

Battle Queen kept on strongly inside the final furlong but was unable to get on terms with an improving rival who benefited from being ridden more prominently in a contest run at just an ordinary gallop.

Battle Queen would have made the winner work harder had she not conceded first run and it shouldn't be long before she's off the mark in handicaps, mindful of how well she ran when runner-up behind subsequent Musidora second Francophone at Southwell and then when sixth in the Sandringham at Royal Ascot.

The William Haggas-trained Cool Legend shaped well in defeat for the second race running and this time the son of Sea The Stars left the firm impression he would have been right in the mix had he enjoyed more luck in running.

Waited with, he had yet to be asked for his effort when getting no room under two furlongs out, eventually getting a gap in the final furlong and finishing a never-nearer fourth behind Great Bedwyn, beaten little more than a length behind the winner.

Looking more straightforward on this flatter track than he had done when runner-up at Goodwood the time before, Cool Legend certainly isn’t one to be giving up on just yet.

Dashing Donkey failed to complete the hat-trick but he still shaped as if in top form and looks capable of adding to his tally when back in a race that pans out better.

A high draw is often a disadvantage at Leicester and Dashing Donkey, who broke from stall 14, found himself much closer to the near side than the first three home.

The action developed away from him down the centre of the course but he kept on in encouraging fashion and, having looked an improved performer of late, remains one to watch out for.

Timeform Eyecatcher: Wednesday

BAREFOOT WARRIOR

The finish to the seven-furlong novice at Thirsk was fought out by a couple who had looked like smart prospects when winning by a wide margin on their previous outing, so it reflects well on Barefoot Warrior that he was able to finish hot on their heels on debut.

Barefoot Warrior understandably showed inexperience on his first outing, needing to be ridden along entering the home straight and also edging to his left when attempting to close over a furlong out. But he shaped with plenty of encouragement amidst that inexperience as he closed all the way to the line and was ultimately beaten only a short head and a neck in third.

Barefoot Warrior boasts a good pedigree being by Saxon Warrior out of an unraced half-sister to French 1000 Guineas winner Beauty Parlour and he can build on this highly promising start to his career.

Timeform Eyecatcher: Tuesday

Winner, 5f fillies’ novice, Beverley, Tuesday 16 July

Coto de Caza had shown plenty of ability on her debut for Simon & Ed Crisford when a close third in a similar event at Lingfield last month and, sent off odds on here, confirmed that in no uncertain terms, looking a useful prospect.

Slowly away again, as on her debut, Coto de Caza was nonetheless soon travelling well behind the leader and quickly drew clear once leading under two furlongs out, winning with plenty in hand by five lengths from Loudan.

The speedy daughter of Sioux Nation, a €270,000 breeze-up buy, looks ready for a higher grade with the Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood appealing as a good option to test that theory.

Third, 6f handicap, Ayr, Monday 15 July

Aberama Gold has yet to win this season but he has slipped in the weights and is threatening to come good soon.

Indeed, he may well have won on Monday with better luck as he was only denied by a short-head and three-quarters of a length in third despite being bumped by a wandering rival a furlong out which briefly checked his momentum.

It's worth remembering that Aberama Gold won both starts last season after shaping well in the same race at Ayr, including the Stewards' Cup. He ran on Monday off a mark 5 lb lower than he did in the Stewards' Cup, while he's 6 lb lower than the mark he last defied at Doncaster in October.
