It’s not often you’d be able to say a horse that ran second to a subsequent Breeders’ Cup Classic winner over twelve months ago would still be a maiden, but that’s the situation today’s pick finds himself in.
IGNITE THE LIGHT was making his second start in November 2023 when chasing home Sierra Leone in a maiden special weight at Aqueduct and the trajectories they’ve gone on since couldn’t have been in more stark contrast.
Ignite The Light finished a well-beaten fourth on a sloppy track the following month and has only been seen twice this year. To be fair they were quite difficult spots at Santa Anita and Saratoga and there is reason to be positive now back at Aqueduct.
Richard Dutrow is having a brilliant meet at the New York track and sees fit to keep Ignite The Light in maiden special weight company rather than dropping in class.
He gets Lasix for the first time and has been gelded since we last saw him in August.
He's also a half-brother to Grade 1 winner By The Moon, so there are still expectations on pedigree and he looks worth a small each-way wager at the odds.
