Wind of Change - 1.52 Market Rasen

Finding solid winning form amongst this merry bunch is not easy. In fact, next time someone tells you finding winners isn’t rocket science, steer them towards this.

Take THAT, space boffins. But these are the races that the masochistic Massey forces upon me on a daily basis, and when I complain that going through the form of class 5 handicap chases is sucking the very life out of me, he insists that his love of low-grade plodathons is just as valid as my preference for races you can time using a watch rather than a calendar. “You can’t tell me what to do - I’m a journalist now” he says by way of the final word, and I gather from his long-suffering Mrs that he uses the same line verbatim when baulking at household chores.

Hurricane Vic was with Alan King when he first started out on his jumping career, where he entered the Massey notebook as: “definite future chaser” as far back as 2014. He didn’t cut the mustard at Barbury Castle, but he has won a couple of points since, and this really does look his best chance to break his duck under Rules.

Let’s point out the positives of an each-way bet on him here - he’s generally consistent, his two chase efforts at Market Rasen have seen him go close both times (beaten 2¼ lengths and four lengths respectively) and last time out he led until the last half furlong, only weakening out of it very late in the day after looking the winner when kicking clear three out, to the extent that he traded as low as 1.16 in the run. He would arguably have won if held on to a bit longer that day, and he’s clearly capable of defying his current mark.

That form of that latest effort has worked out quite well, throwing up a couple of next-time-out winners, and while the way he capitulated might be a worry, he’s also had wind surgery since then, which you’d hope will see him finish off his race better, and in truth a repeat of that run will see him on the premises.

Blinkered View - 2.52 Market Rasen

Another low-grade handicap but Jonjoela rather jumps off the page as a likely winner. She wasn’t going anywhere quickly for much of 2019 but a change of scenery to Alex Hales brought about an immediate reward, winning a little race at Plumpton with plenty in hand. The blinkers on then were missing at Fakenham on her reappearance in October, but it didn’t stop her running very well, being the only one to give the improving Skylannna Breeze any sort of a race, the pair 12 lengths clear of the third.

The 3lb for that run is wholly justified, given the winner has since gone in again, and the third was narrowly beaten in a handicap chase, while the return of blinkers here can only be a positive given she went in snatched to some degree, and is proven in the headgear. She drops in grade here too, and we expect her to try and make all from what still looks a very low mark.

We’d have her a fair bit shorter than the current 13/2, and she is quite a strong selection as a result.

No Mind Tricks - 3.37 Leicester

It was good to see Dylan’s Sea Song get her head in front at Southwell last time. A 5lb rise for that still leaves her below her initial handicap mark, but the prospect of soft ground - there’s a bit more rain forecast for Leicester before race time - makes her less appealing today. Broke Away was second in this last year but is still 6lb higher this time around and didn’t really show enough on her reappearance at Ffos Las last month. Connections reach for the hood but her case isn’t compelling, and it’s Jedhi that catches the eye most on what is her handicap debut today.

Capable of solid form on the Flat, winning a Class 2 fillies handicap at Newbury in July of a BHA mark of 85, she’s got herself handicapped over hurdles fairly quickly, having had her initial run in this discipline as recently as mid-October. She’s been a little bit keen in her three starts so far but this big field should ensure she gets plenty of cover, and she looks very well handicapped on a mark just 13lb higher than that Flat win. Jedd O’Keeffe is a rare visitor to Leicester but had a 50/1 second here two weeks ago, and Jedhi simply looks too well handicapped to ignore here.
