Ryan Moore looks a key booking for SUMMERGHAND in Saturday's Qatar Stewards' Cup at Goodwood, and the five-year-old is fancied to gain reward for some consistent efforts this season over a course and distance which could prove ideal.
Possibly unlucky when beaten a neck by Flavius Titus (now 5lb worse off) on his reappearance at Newmarket in the spring, David O'Meara's five-year-old finished just ahead of the same horse next time without proving any match for the hugely impressive On The Warpath who hasn't been seen since.
On his next start, Summerghand may just have found the stiff six furlongs at Ascot his undoing when a creditable fifth in the Wokingham behind Cape Byron, form that has been well boosted by the runner-up Tis Marvellous, Danzeno (third) and Raucous (fourth and now penalised) with Gunmetal (11th in this last year) just behind in sixth.
Most recently, a keeping on third behind Danzeno at Haydock in a small field was satisfactory enough and his racing style suggests he'll be finishing strongly off the likely fast pace here on this easier six furlongs compared to Ascot.
In truth, this doesn't look a vintage renewal and, while age may be catching up with him, Growl is fancied to also go well as he boasts such an excellent record in this race.
Fourth to Dancing Star in 2016, fourth again to Lancelot Du Lac a year later and third to Gifted Master 12 months ago, Richard Fahey's seven-year-old can run off a mark of just 90 (compared to a peak rating of 117) and the last time he raced over six furlongs on fastish ground resulted in a creditable second at York.
Earlier, in an audacious bid to find the winner of the consolation race as well, PUDS makes plenty of appeal given her excellent course form.
Successful over five furlongs here in May, Richard Hughes' filly has followed up with a second to Lake Volta (didn't get the clearest of runs) and then chased home the subsequently listed placed Richenza (now rated 6lb higher) on a softer surface, both over this course and distance.
In a race in which many of her rivals lack consistency, she looks sure to run her race in the hands of Shane Kelly.
