SUMMERGHAND is fancied to defy top weight and give us a winning start to this week's Newmarket Craven meeting in Tuesday's Weatherbys TBA Handicap.
David O'Meara's gelding improved his rating by 20lb last season when successful four times (three of those on fast ground) and, on occasions, travelled so well as to suggest there could be more to come.
What's more Summerghand has a good record when fresh having won first time out last season at Chelmsford, and he also scored after a six-week absence in his first (three-year-old) season.
At one point last term, he reached a rating of 100, but is back to 97 here and looks over-priced in the market albeit in a competitive race.
Later on, local trainer Roger Varian may have high hopes that his Oh So Sharp Stakes winner Mot Juste can confirm placings with Angel's Hideaway and Sunday Star when they renew rivalry in the Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes.
With Andrea Atzeni booked to ride, she appears to be the stable preferred to QABARA (David Egan) but I was quite taken with the latter's debut course and distance victory last September when she led close home to beat Desirous, Rainbow Heart and Baba Ghanouj.
Those three fillies have all won since and this strong-looking daughter of Scat Daddy could make up into a useful performer this season.
Main Edition is the highest rated runner but ran a little flat when a beaten favourite in the Rockfel Stakes when last seen and, while the runner-up Dandhu boosted the form by winning the Fred Darling at Newbury last Saturday, she was in trouble some way out that day.
