Saturday's racing preview, tips and suggestions

Ashley Iveson provides race-by-race selections for Saturday's action, with Frontiersman fancied to lower the colours of Defoe at Newbury.

Kaspersky gets the nod in what looks a wide-open renewal of the Betfred Hungerford Stakes at Newbury.

The six-year-old was a multiple Group-race winner on the continent before joining Jane Chapple-Hyam earlier this year and although he has failed to add to his tally during his relatively short stay in Britain, he has raised his game with each run and performed admirably in defeat every time.

His initial effort in Ascot's Paradise Stakes blew away the cobwebs and he was then runner-up in a decent handicap at Nottingham.

Chapple-Hyam made the bold decision to throw Kaspersky in at the deep end in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, but he ran a stormer to finish fifth and he ran just as well, if not a little better, when runner-up to the high-class Mutakayyef in last month's Summer Mile.

The drop from a mile to seven furlongs this weekend is probably not ideal, but with the ground on the easy side, he might just get away with it.

Kaspersky is bound for Australia later this year and looks to have a good opportunity to sign off his spell on these shores on a high.

Frontiersman is preferred to Defoe in an intriguing clash of the generations for the Betfred Geoffrey Freer Stakes.

The three-year-old Defoe has climbed the ladder rapidly with three consecutive victories so far this season, culminating in a Listed success at Hamilton last month.

He receives 9lb weight-for-age allowance from Frontiersman, but Charlie Appleby's charge is rated 7lb superior, so it could be tight.

Frontiersman bolted up in a Newmarket handicap back in May before running an excellent race to beat all bar Highland Reel in the Coronation Cup at Epsom.

The Princess of Wales's Stakes looked a good opportunity for him to gain a win at Pattern level, but he found stablemate Hawkbill too strong on the day.

There was no disgrace in that effort. Hawkbill is a Coral-Eclipse winner after all and with a slight step up in trip not a concern, Frontiersman should be very hard to beat.

The Listed Denford Stakes - formerly known as the Washington Singer - has attracted nine runners.

Hey Gaman just about sets the standard, but the Queen's Learn By Heart was mightily impressive on his second start at Doncaster for William Haggas and might just be a bit special.

It is one of the big days of the year at Ripon, with the William Hill Great St Wilfrid taking centre stage.

Pipers Note never runs a bad race and should give us a good run for our money again in the main event.

Ruth Carr's charge won twice earlier this season, including a course and distance success, and ran three fine races in defeat in July.

His latest effort was in last week's Shergar Cup Dash over five furlongs, when he was beaten less than three lengths into fourth place.

Coming back up to six furlongs will suit and the handicapper has given him a real chance by dropping him to a mark of 99, just 1lb higher than his last victory at Doncaster.

It is difficult to look beyond Order Of St George in the Irish St Leger Trial at the Curragh.

Aidan O'Brien's star stayer won this Group Three a year ago before suffering a shock defeat in the Irish Leger itself.

He was last seen going down by a short-head to Big Orange when defending his Gold Cup crown at Royal Ascot and a reproduction of that effort should be more than good enough.
