Our columnist reflects on a good day for the yard at Beverley and a mouthwatering Royal Ascot team.
Saturday was a very good day at the office at Beverley with both Midnight Affair and Bombay Bazaar winning.
The former landed the Hilary Needler which I was expecting her to. We think she’s very good – her work is exceptional, I’m struggling to think of another filly I’ve seen gallop like she does at Musley Bank.
So you go to the races and expect them to win on the bridle but it doesn’t work out like that – it’s a totally different ball game. However I was pleased with her. She was always going to win and wasn’t doing a great deal in front.
It will probably be the Queen Mary for her now although we’ll keep an eye on the Albany.
Bombay Bazaar is a horse that has surprised me, all he’s done is improve, and he won well on Saturday. The owner would be keen to go to Royal Ascot with him and the colt has earned the right to – initial thoughts would be the Windsor Castle, but we’ll see.
I said I thought I had a very good set of two-year-olds this year and it must be the strongest team we’ve ever taken south.
Emperor’s Son and Malc who both won on debut at Carlisle, go to Ascot as will Golden Mile, Perfect Power’s half-brother who won at Leicester.
Ripon winner Pretty Crystal is an intended runner while Matnookh, a very promising third at Windsor on Monday, could head to the Chesham. There may be another one or two who journey down too. It's very exciting.
Sunday

She’s drawn a little wider than I’d have liked in 11 but is in great form right now having two of her last three starts. Ground and trip are ideal but I just wish she had a lower stall.

He’s been running OK and finished third at York last time. He’s just a horse I wouldn’t want to over-race on quick ground, he might be better off with a bit of cut.
