Matt Brocklebank is back in the hot-seat with his best bets for Taunton and Chelmsford today.
PHOENIX RISEN could be worth chancing in the conditional jockeys' handicap hurdle at Taunton. He's saved most of his better efforts for this venue over the past couple of years, winning twice over course and distance in April 2023, and he's back on a mark 4lb lower than when last successful. That's largely down to being out of sorts when last seen in the summer but the break is entitled to have done some good and his trainer Jeremy Scott was 4-20 at this venue during the 2023-24 campaign, registering a level-stakes profit of +8.50.
RESPIRO SOLITARIO - 6.30 Chelmsford
Flaine will be popular here but a lot went right for her on stable debut at Southwell earlier in the month and this looks a tougher assignment racing off 5lb higher from stall eight of 11. Housed down on the inside, RESPIRO SOLITARIO looks the one to be on after his better effort when fitted with a tongue-tie (retained) at Wolverhampton last time out. The assessor has eased him another couple of pounds and the drop from a 0-65 handicap to a 0-55 could be enough to yield a first career success for the son of Bated Breath.

HYLAND – 1.45 Cheltenham (NAP)
Just four line up for the Listed Mucking Brilliant Paddy Power Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham on Friday but HYLAND can continue the good start he’s had to his fencing career for Nicky Henderson. He won very nicely here at the Showcase Meeting and while there were plenty of fences omitted that day due to low sun he looked to have benefitted from fitting in a few novice chases in the summer. Springwell Bay carries the maximum penalty here and that could swing things in the direction of Hyland who will love the good ground.
JETEYE – 12.45 Newcastle
JETEYE bumped into the thriving Skyjack Hijack here last time and with no rival as progressive as that in the Hawkstone Stout Available At The Hawk Handicap Hurdle he can notch up a second hurdles win. Sam England’s horse ran well over the course and distance on similar ground last time from the same mark and a repeat of that run could well be good enough here. The easy winner, Skyjack Hijack, has subsequently bolted up at Exeter, so Jeteye didn’t have much chance that day. He does in this company.

NEIGH BOTHA – 12.58 Southwell
NEIGH BOTHA was pulled out of an engagement at Sedgefield on Thursday to run in this novices’ handicap chase at Southwell and that decision can be justified with a victory. Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero’s horse collected his only chase victory over this course and distance in the summer and he ran well here last time five days after running at Uttoxeter. The handicapper has dropped him 3lb for that and after just over three weeks off he can take advantage of his new mark.
BEAUZON – 4.25 Wolverhampton
Ian Williams’ BEAUZON might just go on another winning streak now he has dropped in the weights and he’s of interest in the opening apprentice handicap at Wolverhampton. The five-year-old rattled off a course and distance four-timer in January and February, climbing for a mark of 55 to 72 and after eight months in the doldrums he looked back to form at this track last time, winning off a mark of 54. That was four days ago and, turned out quickly, he could be too good for this company in his current mood.
