Naina lands Newmarket gamble

The well backed Naina (6/1) finished with a flourish to land the British Stallion Studs EBF 'Jersey Lily' Fillies' Nursery Handicap at Newmarket.

Racing closest to the stands' side rail, Naina was settled just in behind the pace in her group by Christian Howarth who asked the Expert Eye filly to go through the gears approaching the two furlong pole.

She responded willingly and was in front by the next distance marker, keeping on well to score by one and three quarter lengths from Magic Love. Royal Equerry was a length away in third.

Trained by John Ryan, Naina has now won four of her eight starts.

"You just don't know how good she is because every time you think this is going to be tough she seems to get another breath and go again. The last two times she has won Silvestre (De Sousa) got off her and said he definitely thought she was black type material," he revealed.

"The seller was a Newmarket seller, a £20,000 race; it was all part of a plan, the ground was right and we were trying to get a bit of a path but we did think we were on a short fuse because she's not very big and you're getting later in the season and the other horses are getting stronger and getting bigger and she hasn't grown but she doesn't care. She would be the girl that goes out into any club and walk out with the one she wants!

"It's heart that wins races and she excels every time you ask her yet you wouldn't know at home, she just turns up on these days. We'll have a look at something with a bit of black type in it and see what's open to us."

Sands in time

Saqqara Sands (4/1) put her experience to good use in the Blandford Bloodstock Maiden Fillies' Stakes when getting the better of a duel with Texas Starlight.

Runner-up at Wolverhampton on debut, Saqqara Sands proved sharper with that run under her belt and kept on well to win by one and a half lengths with a further three lengths back to favourite Wild Angel in third.

Saqqara Sands was capping a good day for trainer Ralph Beckett who said: "She was drawn badly at Wolves and she wears a stalls rug and that often makes them slow away the first couple of times.

"She wasn't slow away today and was very professional I thought. I'm not sure (if she'll run again this season). I was just saying to Philip Deer (representing the owner) that she's turning in her coat this week so we'll see how that pans out and see how we go over the next week or so.

"She could come back for something like the Montrose maybe. I'm not sure she was in love with the slower ground but she's a filly with a future for sure. She has plenty of size and scope about her, she'll definitely get a mile and could get further."

Spanish passes Newmarket test

Marcus Tregoning sent out Bronze Angel to win the feature Cambridgeshire in both 2012 and 2014 and enjoyed another victory on the Rowley Mile, albeit in the slightly less prestigious Stradivarius First Foals 2024 Handicap.

Spanish Blaze (13/2) was at the foot of the weights in the seven furlong contest but the consistent three-year-old came home well under Trevor Whelan to complete an across-the-cards double for his trainer.

Street Kid was a length back in second with 3/1 joint-favourite Mission To Moon a length and a half third.

It was a fourth career win in 14 starts for Spanish Blaze and a second success of 2024, due reward for some solid runs in defeat.
