The Punting Pointers team of Rory Delargy and David Massey have four selections for Saturday's action around the tracks.
Racing betting tips: Saturday April 26
1pt e.w John Barbour in the 1.20 Sandown at 15/2 (1/5 1,2,3,4 General, min 7/1)
1pt e.w Resplendent Grey in the 4.10 Sandown at 13/2 (1/5 1,2,3,4,5,6 Paddy Power, min 6/1)
1pt win Myal in the 2.40 Haydock at 10/3 (General)
1pt win Momaer in the 4.20 Leicester at 14/1 (General, min 12-1)
1:20 Sandown
We do not understand why Kientzheim and Sorceleur have been made shorter prices than the two horses that beat them at Southwell, Serious Challenge and John Barbour. Neither makes much appeal to reverse the form, with Kientzheim looking something of a weak finisher to date.
JOHN BARBOUR looks the bet. He was the one that sat off the pace at Southwell but made up good ground to take second without ever threatening the all-the-way winner, looking like there was plenty more to come. He does actually have the look one one laid out for the race, and I think that handicapper has let him in light.
1:50 Sandown
Two against the field for us here.
Inedit Star was a selection at Aintree at a big price and duly landed a bit of each-way money by finishing third (not unbacked either, going off 18-1 having been almost three times that the night before). He tries 2m4f again and is worth another go at it, having looked in need of it when second at Bangor over 2m1½f last spring. He stuck to the task well at Aintree and if over those exertions, can go well.
Mahons Glory will give this a go from the front. Winner of both starts for his new yard, that of Dylan Cunha, he’s looked right back to his best and better, and the only question is whether he needs a flat track to show his best. Rory feels he does, but I don’t think that’s been fully proven as yet and am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, as his jumping has been so good, and he might get his own way on the front end.
4:10 Sandown
Minella Cocooner makes most appeal of Willie's battalion. Winner of this last year, Jonathan Burke did too much too soon on him in the National, holding every chance two out but weakened out of it late. He won this off a 26-day turnaround last year and whilst he’s had five days less to recover this time around, Rory still thinks he’s the most likely Mullins charge to win. Danny Mullins back in the saddle is hardly a negative either.
Of the home team we like RESPLENDENT GREY best. He never really travelled when fourth in the National Hunt Handicap Chase at Cheltenham but stuck well to the task, and hopefully cheekpieces today should help (Olly Murphy a respectable 4-17 with five others placed using cheekpieces for the first time in the last year). That form has, of course, been franked with the winner taking the Irish National earlier in the week, and we know Resplendent Grey will be fine at Sandown, having finished an excellent second to the classy Handstands here in December. Lot to like about his chances.
2:40 Haydock
MYAL looks the one to be with after a run at Doncaster that caught the eye.
He did a lot of the donkey work at Doncaster and probably hit the front too soon, but he shaped like the best horse all the same, and this drop back to seven furlongs is a positive too. In fact, he’s twice a C&D winner, and to show his versatility on ground, one was on heavy, and the other on good to firm. A solid chance to right the Doncaster wrongs.
2:05 Leicester
Julie Camacho has already shown how well she does when given other’s castoffs, and in being given a hard-pulling sprinter to work with, she’s already got a blueprint for that with her Group 1-winning sprinter Shaquille, who she got the best out of despite being a free-going sort.
Germanic looked a useful sort for William Haggas but lost his way, but is just the sort Camacho will turn around and get good races out of. It may be he needs this debut run for the yard after six months off, but he’s one you should have on your radar.
4:20 Leicester
MOMAER dotted up over this C&D in a fillies handicap for Mark Loughnane back in 2023 and kept her form well for much of the season, but she’s yet to rediscover her best form as yet for new yard Jack Morland after the best part of a year off.
She might, though, appreciate the return to turf today, having had four goes on the all-weather this winter, and also having had a break - her Leicester win came after a 171-day absence, so there’s more to like about her chances than first appears.
