Ian Ogg analyses the last 10 renewals of Saturday's Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury and picks out the key statistics.
It's rather a shame that De Bruyne Horse has sidestepped the Weatherbys Super Sprint in favour of the Group Two Prix Robert Papin as he was opposable on the stats.
Not a single one of the last 10 winners (the 2007 renewal was abandoned) had won beyond the minimum trip and the Richard Hannon-trained juvenile had done his winning, and most of his racing, over six furlongs.
That stat also rates as a negative for Goodwood maiden winner Snazzy Jazzy and One For June along with a few of the outsiders.
Royal Ascot form is obviously worth paying close attention to and that includes horses that finished down the field last month as a couple of the longer priced winners of this race had such a profile.
Maggies Angel didn't run at Royal Ascot but she does have leading form claims after finishing second in Listed company at Newmarket last time. It's a negative that she's been beaten three times since debut but two of those runs did, at least, come at Listed level so perhaps it's worth excusing her.
Paul Hanagan's presence in the saddle suggestst that she is the first string for Richard Fahey who is bidding to win this race for the third time in five years but few of his other runners can be dismissed with confidence.
Connery is another to have been beaten three times but one of those was in the Coventry Stakes and he was far from disgraced in a Listed race at Sandown last time. His trainer won this race in 2006, albeit with a runner that had won the Windsor Castle Stakes.
Lady Livius was a twice-raced maiden when winning this at 100/1 for Richard Hannon Senior in 2005 (the year before these stats start) but all of the winners since had won at least once and putting a line through the maidens significantly reduces the field size.
Debutante's Ball has been campaigned solely in Group company (finishing behind Mother Of Dragons at Ascot) since winning at Chepstow and merits respect from a featherweight with fillies enjoying plenty of success in this contest.
Time Trail is unbeaten but will need to step up on the form that he has shown to date and preference is for CORINTHIA KNIGHT who was last seen finishing in midfield in the Windsor Castle.
The winner of his first two starts, he was no match for Frozen Angel next time but that horse went on to finish fourth in the Group Two Norfolk Stakes to put his performance in some context.
Corinthia Knight fared less well in his Royal Ascot assignment but that was by no means a bad performance and he should be more than capable of making his presence felt in this company for trainer Archie Watson.
