Viktorija Golubic won her eighth match in a row to reach the main draw of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells - but former champion Vera Zvonareva saw her hopes dashed.
Golubic ousted Britain's Katie Boutler in the final round of qualifying, fresh from her win at the WTA 125K Series event in Indian Wells last week.
The Swiss triumphed 6-4 6-3 over Boulter, who had been seeded sixth in the qualifiers, and booked a meeting with Barbora Strycova in the first round of the main event.
Zvonareva, who won the title at Indian Wells in 2009, did not fare as well and was forced to retire from her qualifying match.
She had been trailing America's Christina McHale 6-0 2-0.
Number three seed Stefanie Voegele scored a 6-2 7-6 (4) victory over former world number five Sara Errani, while 17-year-old American wild card Catherine McNally upset 19th seed Timea Bacsinszky 4-6 6-0 6-4.
Number two seed Sara Sorribes Tormo was left disappointed as she was defeated by Kateryna Kozlova 6-1 7-6 (6).
Meanwhile, Australia's Priscilla Hon continued her winning ways, having beaten top qualifying seed Anastasia Potapova in the opening round, by dismissing 13th seed Veronika Kudermetova 6-4 6-2.
Hon fought back from a break down in the opening set to claim victory in an hour and 20 minutes.
Zhu Lin, Ysaline Bonaventure and Nao Hibino all rallied from a set down to win their respective matches, while Misaki Doi, Zarina Diyas and Natalia Vikhlyantseva also secured a spot in the main draw.
