Our Hong Kong expert Graham Cunningham is back to mark your card for Wednesday's meeting at Happy Valley, live on Sky Sports Racing.
There was a lot to unpack on a significant Sha Tin Saturday card and the main points can be summarised as follows:
Matthew Poon is enjoying a bounceback season and marked his 31st birthday with a double completed when the progressive Green N White swooped late to land the Panasonic Cup over 1400m.
Wunderbar was turned over at 1.4 when failing to get past Magic Control in the chief supporting event but will remain a potent force in a good handicap once John Size steps him back up to 1200m.
Frankie Lor is back in the groove after a quiet start to the season and ended the card in fine style as the progressive Savvy Brilliant and Voyage Samurai landed a pair of Class 3 handicaps.
And, although he faded into sixth having been punted for the feature, stablemate Bottomuptogether still looks like a horse who will shine once his sights are set on sprinting again.
Golden Sixty is settling into retirement Down Under but the rest of HK’s elite are limbering up for lucrative HKIR prep races at Sha Tin this weekend and battle lines are being drawn.
Ricky Yiu feels his stable star Voyage Bubble can “turn the tables” on emerging star Galaxy Patch when they contest a Jockey club Mile that includes another G1 winner in Beauty Eternal.
David Hayes feels “the conditions get better every time” as his rampant young sprinter Ka Ying Rising prepares to take on G1 winners California Spangle, Victor The Winner and Invincible Sage in the Jockey Club Sprint.
And globetrotting Horse of the Year Romantic Warrior will be one of the shortest priced favourites of the season as he makes his eagerly awaited reappearance for Danny Shum and James McDonald in the Jockey Club Cup.
One key angle in HK analysis is to pinpoint recent winners set to find things much tougher having risen in the weights and the latest midweek Happy Valley card throws up several cases in point.
And so, in full knowledge that statements like this can come back to bite you, here comes Wednesday’s Wary List.
HAPPY TANGO and TEAM HAPPY look worth opposing in the 12.10 and 1.10 after 5lb hikes for scoring late last month.
JUMBO LEGEND is another to take on in the 2.15 after a 6lb hike for pouncing in a pace collapse contest, while SUGAR SUGAR, YOUNG EMPEROR and DENIELD all have more to prove in a strong finale having been raised 6lb, 6lb and 7lb for recent wins.
That finale at 2.50 features several viable alternatives to the three last-time-out scorers but a low drawn horse sitting on a peak performance is seldom a bad option over 1200m at the Valley and PRAWNS ELEVEN and ROMANTIC SON both fit the bill nicely.
Romantic Son couldn’t resist Young Emperor’s late surge having been backed into 2.5 for his debut but David Hayes’s gelding
travelled sweetly for a long way and a 5lb pull along with a good draw in stall 3 ought to make him a key player under Zac Purton.
Prawns Eleven didn’t progress quite so well as expected after a smooth Sha Tin success in March but he caught the eye on his latest start – coming home well after a tough trip to chase home subsequent winner Brave Star – and looks ready to go close again under Harry Bentley.
LEAN MASTER is another sprinter with a handy draw (1) and a solid recent effort to recommend him.
Dennis Yip’s gelding showed fine speed at last week’s Valley meeting, going off a bit harder than ideal if anything, and another bold effort is on the cards in the 12.10 if 7lb claimer Ellis Wong can ration his energy more evenly.
Team Happy looks bound to grab the lead as he bids to follow up his recent win in the 1.10 but Andrea Atzeni’s mount didn’t have an ounce to spare.
CIRCUIT DUFFY was sent off favourite to make a winning debut that night but couldn’t land a blow after being squeezed at the start and again on the bend. Purton keeps the faith and he’s another who’s drawn the inside alley.
Jumbo Legend will be lucky to get a similar tactical set-up to the one he exploited on his latest start in the 2.15 and two who chased him home make more appeal at revised weights.
Step forward GLORIOUS JOURNEY and SOLEIL FIGHTER.
Glorious Journey has a 4lb pull for being caught on the line four weeks ago and looks to have plenty in his favour with the Lor team in such good heart.
Soleil Fighter faded into sixth having raced too close to the severe gallop behind Jumbo Legend but he bounced back with a fine second recently and is another to keep onside from what looks a fair mark.
