SMITH has done us a favour or two in the past and although seemingly going through the motions of late, there are reasons to believe that he can bounce back to form over his ideal track and trip for trainer Lydia Richards.
Smith has won six of his 15 starts over 2m at Lingfield with his most recent win in 2023 coming off a mark of 67. He’s not really looked like adding to his tally this season but now finds himself rated just 49 and if he’s going to bounce back it’s likely to be at this time of year, with all but one of his wins coming in the winter months.
Smith’s last two wins came after having a couple of outings over hurdles to sharpen him up and Richards has again gone down that route of late, with Smith running a better race at Plumpton in October before finishing down the field in a handicap at Fontwell last time.
Those runs are more encouraging that two poor efforts on his last stint over timber, and it’s hoped that doing something different has a positive effect as it did almost exactly two years ago when he won two out of three back here after that short spell hurdling.
