Kirk Cousins led the Minnesota Vikings to a 19-9 victory over his old club the Washington Redskins as the side notched up their fourth straight win.
Dalvin Cook had the game's only touchdown when he crashed into the end zone on a four-yard run towards the end of the first half.
Dan Bailey scored 12 points for the Vikings after converting four field goals from as many attempts, the longest from 50 yards.
Case Keenum, who replaced Cousins as Washington's QB, threw for 130 yards but left the game early with a concussion.
Redskins rookie Dwayne Hakins has had a lot of publicity surrounding him, but he again struggled when throwing an interception from one of just five pass attempts.
It was an emotional night for veteran running back Adrian Peterson, who returned to the team where he made his name and ran his way into sixth place on the NFL's all-time rushing list.
Peterson was given a great ovation from the fans who worshipped him for a decade, and he admitted it was an emotional game for him even if his current team lost badly.
"I had to hold tears back, to be honest," Peterson said. "It was special, a special moment."
Peterson has now overtaken legendary running backs Jerome Bettis and LaDainian Tomlinson in the all-time standings - something he was delighted to achieve in familiar surroundings.
"Just coming back and seeing the love they still have for me and they showed, man, it felt good. Even in defeat I'm able to embrace it and take it for what it was and it meant a lot. I spent a decade here so just to see that ovation and the love they showed it was meaningful."
The Vikings improve to 6-2 with the win - behind the Green Bay Packers in the NFC North - while Washington sit bottom of the NFC East on 1-7.
