Timeform greyhounds preview and free betting tips: Joe Nordoff selections for Tuesday's action

There’s a smashing night of action over at Sheffield on Tuesday with the track hosting one of their feature competitions in the shape of the Gain Greyhound Nutrition 3-Steps to Victory Final and Joe Nordoff from Timeform reveals his best bets on the card.

Tuesday Greyhound tips

Back Swift Woof (Trap 2) 6.51 Sheffield

Back Little Venture (Trap 1) 7.09 Sheffield

Back Catrigg Candela (Trap 4) 7.58 Sheffield

Back Clever Airmount (Trap 4) 8.27 Sheffield

Back Savana Eruption (Trap 5) 8.46 Sheffield

The open race action gets underway with the Owlerton Standard Trophy over 500 metres at 6.51 and in what looks a pretty competitive affair on paper it may well be worth siding with SWIFT WOOF (Trap 2, TF 126) to bounce back from a luckless run in his respective semi-final of the 3-Steps to Victory last week.

Barrie Draper’s classy local boasts early pace as his most potent weapon, that he advertised when registering back-to-back open victories over C&D in July. The draw outside powerful Ballymac Aboutu (Trap 1, TF 100) will hold no fears, not least with that rival often proving inconsistent at the boxes and the selection is expected to steal a march on the approach to the opening corner and not look back.

The main threat may emerge in the shape of Newcastle raider Longrange Dick (Trap 3) who quickly put a luckless run in the 3-Steps behind him when bolting up over 6-bends on home soil 6 days ago, an effort backed up with a Timeform rating of 124. Another who is a little hit and miss at the traps, he’ll have a part to play if turning handy behind the selection.

The Owlerton 480 trophy features at 7.09 and whilst forecast odds may be on the skinny side we think LITTLE VENTURE (Trap 1, TF119) is worth backing to continue his red-hot form. A graduate from the graded strength at Newcastle, he’s been quick to establish himself as a quality open-race operator this year, performances at Sunderland in particular highlighting that fact. A slick winner over C&D on his penultimate start, he had little trouble following up over the same trip at Nottingham 8 days ago.

His draw in red may prove a particularly good one this evening, not least with Marinas Artist (Trap 2, TF 101) expected to be taking a middle course on the approach to the opening bend and Little Venture is expected to use that racing room to get prominent, drive the opening bend and assume control by halfway.

Acomb Jenny (Trap 3, TF109) is a classy performer in her own right and hasn’t had the rub of the green of late but the main threat may come in the shape of Letter Cain (Trap 4, TF 118) who boasts some excellent form at Doncaster and impressed with a slick 28.01 sole trial over C&D ahead of this assignment 7 days ago.

Our next selection comes at 7.58 with the bitches lining up in the Owlerton Ladies Standard and with the locals well represented its John Sharp’s CATRIGG CANDELA (Trap 4, TF 115) who is fancied to enhance what is already an excellent record around the South Yorkshire venue. It’s easy to forgive a lesser effort at Towcester recently, not least given she arrived there without any previous course knowledge. A daughter of Catrigg Croft who similarly excelled around Sheffield, her early pace is a joy to behold and with the 500-metre trip around here within range, she’s fancied to trap swiftly and have enough in reserve to hold off the challengers.

TULLYMURRY OLIVE (Trap 2, TF 107) faces her toughest assignment to date but has been most progressive in climbing the graded ladder of late, taking the double upgrade in her stride and battling tenaciously to register A1 success 10 days ago and she may well emerge as the chief threat operating in the blue vest.

The first of the finals over 660-metres takes place at 8.27 and it’s one who hasn’t been seen to anything like best effect of late in the shape of CLEVER AIRMOUNT (Trap 4, 129) who is fancied to put it all together and resume winning ways. A semi-finalist in the Ladbrokes Golden Jacket earlier in the year, it’s all been rather stop/start for the daughter of Fernando Bale since. Encountering plenty of trouble behind re-opposing Barnside Millie (Trap 5, TF 106) seven days ago, she was noted making good inroads from an unpromising position to grab a qualifying spot.

Considerably better than that effort implies, her main obstacle is avoiding crowding on the short run to the first bend once more but with a class edge over most in this line-up, we’re hopeful with a good break she can be on the premises early and put her strong-running style to good use off the second bend.

Outdoor Duran (Trap 1, TF 108) is low-mileage as a stayer and impressed when defeating La Freya (Trap 6, TF 108) himself last week and he’s fancied to pose the chief threat operating on the rails with further progress not out of the question.

The feature Gain Greyhound Nutrition 3 Steps to Victory is undoubtedly one of the most unique competitions in the calendar, the opening rounds testing greyhounds over 480 and 500 metres, culminating in the final over 660 metres, testing speed and stamina in equal measure.

The competition itself has served up some memorable moments, going back to John Sharp’s shock 25/1 winner Clerihan Gold back in 2012 whilst Barrie Draper has been responsible for two of the last seven winners, most notable his super tracker Ballymac Eske who blew away any stamina doubts when smashing the track record back in 2014.

Despite the unfortunate absence of Maximum Security, this year’s final still looks as intriguing as ever, the betting highlighting that fact with four of the five hopefuls trading at 100/30 or shorter. The only one with 6-bend form is Nipsey Hustle (Trap 4, TF 116) who defeated SAVANA ERUPTION (Trap 5, TF 128) by 2 ¼ lengths at the semi-final stage seven days ago.

However, the latter was noted doing very good late work that day, as he powered away to be the clear leader at the pick-up. A lightly raced, progressive February 19’ whelp Savana Eruption’s exploits over 4 bends at both Towcester and Sheffield have marked him down as a stayer in the making and with his Dam, Volcano a track-record breaking marathon star in her own right, he promises to relish this increase in trip.

Savana Eruption will need one of his better breaks inside Candy Man (Trap 6) who has similarly proved most progressive for the Carol Weatherall Kennel but is fancied to have racing room with his three rivals inside expected to be heading to the rails and Diane Henry’s charge can come home strongest of all to land the £10,000 prize. Lemming Caesar (Trap 1, TF 125) has proved to be a real success story upon joining Michael O’Donnell, unbeaten at Sheffield to date, he may well prove tough to peg back if trapping as well as he did last week back on the rails.

Whilst the youngest in the field, Anynamewilldo (Trap 2, TF 119) has a little bit to find on most recent 4-bend exploits against these but is another who may well improve for the increase in trip.
