There are some high-profile threeballs as you would expect over the first 36 holes with Jon Rahm, Rickie Fowler and Hideki Matsuyama likely to pull in a huge gallery from the morning section on Thursday.
Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Justin Rose will do likewise among the afternoon wave but I will not be getting too heavily involved on day one with chance for more of a watching brief instead to see exactly what is what at Erin Hills.
So it is a low-key start for the daily US Open tips this week but I am going to take a flyer on amateur Scottie Scheffler at over 4/1 as outsider in his showdown with Russell Henley and Harris English (1925BST).
The Texas Longhorn emerged from sectional qualifying in Columbus, Ohio with a birdie on the fourth extra hole of sudden death to secure his place in the main field for a second consecutive year.
He missed the cut 12 months ago but did manage to go under par on day one with a 69 (followed by a 78) at Oakmont which gives us some encouragement in terms of another positive start here.
Henley and English are solid and experienced pros but both are beatable currently with the former struggling to find his best with three missed cuts from four starts and a US Open is probably not the place where this year's Shell Houston Open hero will rediscover his touch.
English arrives on the back of an improved display (T10) in Memphis but ranks 191st among his peers when it comes to scoring in the first round so the case for Scheffler makes sense at the price with him seemingly dismissed by layers on the basis he is a relative unknown.
At 6-3 and 210lb, he won’t be bullied by the Erin Hills layout and his philosophical reaction to having blown a winning opportunity at the recent NCAA Championship suggests he is mentally up to the task in his battle this week against 12 other players from the unpaid ranks.
