Video: Sheffield United's Billy Sharp breaks English league goalscoring record

Watch how Billy Sharp broke a goalscoring record in English league football in Sheffield United's 3-0 win at Wigan on New Year's Day.

The 32-year-old became the top league scorer since the turn of the century, netting his 220th strike to pass Rickie Lambert in the charts.

The Blades forward had an action-packed December and he has taken it into 2019, now scoring six in his last six appearances.

He is currently joint-top of the Sky Bet Championship goalscoring charts on 16, with Aston Villa's Tammy Abraham, and can be backed at 9/2 to win the Golden Boot in May.

Chris Wilder's side are now up to third and closing the gap on top two Leeds and Norwich respectively, who are both without a win in their last two matches. They are priced at evens to seal promotion this term.

Sharp delighted to avoid wait

"I'm glad the goal came today because I didn't want it to keep going on," Sharp told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"I just want to keep scoring goals now and hopefully help the club get promoted.

"It didn't go quite to plan when I was here earlier in my career but I am enjoying every minute of it at the moment; I feel as fit and as strong as I have done.

"I've always wanted to be a Premier League player and I've had a couple of appearances there. It would be a dream to get promoted there with Sheffield United."
