WATCH: Referee accidentally scores a goal in Holland... and it counts

A referee incredibly - albeit accidentally - managed to score a goal in the fourth tier of Dutch football on Saturday.

Even more bizarrely, this is the last weekend it could have possibly happened because from June 1 onwards, the rules are changing to prevent incidents like this.

The next time you see the ball go in the net off a match official (we use this term to cover the possibility of a referees assistant somehow diverting the ball in off his flag) - or indeed just hit him anywhere else on the field, a drop-ball would be given instead.

On this occasion, in a match between Harkemase Boys and HSV Hoek, a cross came into the box following a goal mouth scramble and ended up ricocheting into the net off the hapless referee, who had no choice but to award it.

The goal didn't have much impact on the game as it merely reduced Harkemase's lead to 3-2 before they went and won the game 4-2. But don't let that get in the way of a good story...
