Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino celebrate during Liverpool v Tottenham

Southampton beat a relegation rival in Brighton last weekend to give their survival hopes another boost.

Saints have won seven and drawn three in the Premier League since Ralph Hasenhuttl replaced Mark Hughes in early December, leaving them 16th and five points clear of the bottom three with seven games to go.

Survival is not yet secured but they are heading that way. Friday will be seen as a free hit ahead of a generally favourable run-in against Wolves, Newcastle, Watford, Bournemouth, West Ham and already-relegated Huddersfield.

Since Hasenhuttl came in they have beaten Spurs and Arsenal at St Mary's, drawn at Chelsea and put up a fight in an entertaining 3-2 defeat to Man United at Old Trafford, so this is no picnic for the visitors.

The Austrian's gung-ho style has often been compared to that of Friday's opposite number Jurgen Klopp and it will be interesting to see how they both approach the clash.

Southampton celebrate Yan Valery's stunning goal against Man United at Old Trafford

Southampton have, though, lost to Man City on home turf and they welcome the other title-chasing side in Liverpool to the south coast for Friday Night Football.

Klopp's side wobbled slightly at the end of January with four draws in six putting Man City in the driving seat, but three wins on the bounce have kept them in with a shout of winning their first league title since 1990.

With two Champions League quarter-final legs to play in April as well as the league run-in, it will not be easy but Klopp will, as the old cliche goes, want to take it game-by-game.

Man City returned to the top with a comfortable win over Cardiff on Wednesday. With the Citizens not playing in the league again until April 14, this match is a good chance for the Reds to claim top spot for at least another nine days.

Betting guide

Ralph Hasenhuttl and Jurgen Klopp have been likened for their management styles

Prediction: Southampton 1-1 Liverpool (Sky Bet odds: 15/2)
With Saints now playing with a style similar to the one which Liverpool played in Klopp's first couple of seasons on Merseyside this could be quite the entertainer. The hosts have picked up good results on home turf against top sides and it would be no surprise to see Liverpool drop points here. Hasenhuttl has proved to be tactically astute with well organised displays from Southampton under his tutelage and there could be fine margins in this one, with the visitors possibly frustrated and missing an opportunity to get points on the board ahead of their rivals.

Best bet: Southampton to score 1+ goals at 4/5
An odds-on shot but a good way to start the weekend. Southampton are flying and there is value to be had in them getting something from this game. They have found the back of the net in 11 of their last 12 in all competitions and, whatever the result, they are expected to enhance that run further.

Goals/Stats: James Ward-Prowse to have 2+ shots at 11/8
The shots market has some very attractive prices, both in general and on target. One that stands out is the price on James Ward-Prowse to have two shots at an attractive 11/8, which does not require them to be on target. The England international has taken his game to the next level under Hasenhuttl, scoring six goals and earning a call-up from Gareth Southgate. His stats show he does not shy away when they come up against big-name opponents. He has registered at least two shots in three of his last five games and has had two or more efforts against Spurs (twice), Fulham, Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea this term. Four of his goals have come on home turf, two in his last two appearances there, and his attacking role supporting the front two on the night means he will be key to Southampton if they are to get anything out of this game.

RequestABet: Ward-Prowse and Mane to score at 10/1
