Roy Keane: Manchester United are the new Tottenham

Former club captain Roy Keane has claimed that "Man United are the new Spurs" following their defeat in Saturday's late kick-off.

Pape Matar Sarr's effort combined with Lisandro Martinez turning the ball into his own net was enough to give Ange Postecoglou's side all three points in North London.

It was an outcome that left Keane delivering a withering assessment of the club’s performance.

He told Sky Sports: "I think Man United are the new Spurs. Desperate, absolutely desperate.

"The biggest insult I always think about teams is teams who can’t do it away from home or players who aren’t up for it away from home.

"They’re a good team, they fancy it, when their home fans are in front of them and they’ve got that support and that energy.

"United go away today, second half, weak, no leadership, gave bad goals away. Spurs were lovely, honestly, all credit to Spurs, but United...it’s easy to play against Man United."

However, while Keane was scathing in his analysis of United, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou was more measured in his view of the game. He told BBC Sport: "I thought we gave the ball away a little bit too much and to be fair Man Utd probably had the better of the chances."

The statistics underline his viewpoint, with the visitors posting 14 shots to Tottenham's seven before the break - 1.16 of their over 1.94 expected goals (xG) tally came in the first half.

"I like the fact that we hang in there and worked our way into the game," Postecoglou continued.

"Second half, certainly in spells, it kind of showed the team we want to be. I keep saying we're still a long way to go but I really liked the belief and resilience the guys have and the bravery they have to continue playing that way."

Martinez's own goal came after Tottenham had put up the majority of their 1.44 xG in that second half.

They'd posted eight shots between the 46th and the 83rd minutes, and while it was a United defender who sealed the result, a second goal was coming based on the momentum of the game at that stage.

It was United's first defeat of the campaign after they beat Wolves on opening weekend, although they could consider themselves fortunate not to drop points in that Old Trafford encounter.
