Newport are no strangers to a giant-killing after beating Leeds, Leicester and Middlesbrough in recent seasons while they also held Tottenham to a draw. Michael Flynn's side are clearly one who enjoys the big occasion and they will have little fear coming up against a Newcastle team who have been on-and-off under Steve Bruce's guidance.
County have also secured victory over Sky Bet Championship opposition in both Swansea and Watford in the Carabao Cup this season. At a price of 6/1 across the board, the hosts have been greatly underestimated.
It must be noted that Newcastle beat another Sky Bet League Two side in Morecambe 7-0 in the last round but it shouldn't be anywhere near the same situation this time around. Morecambe suffered a 5-0 defeat in the days before that contest while Newport have enjoyed a strong start to the league campaign.
You can't truly disregard league form when it comes to cup contests but Newcastle have failed to inspire so far. They were comfortably beaten by Brighton while their draw at Spurs came following a ludicrous handball decision in the final moments; Newcastle had one shot on target in that game while Tottenham had 12.
What can be said about Newport's two victories over opposition in a higher division this season is that they were deserved results. They enjoyed the majority of chances against Watford and putting three past a side expected to be at the top of the championship, albeit a changed team, is no easy task.
Some may point to the lack of supporters impacting Newport's chances of success but being the home team in this contest is a clear advantage. "I’m just glad it’s at home because it gives us that little bit of advantage in terms of used to our surroundings," Flynn said of the draw when asked.
All three of their victories in this competition have come at home while those giant-killings mentioned above were also played at Rodney Parade. It's perhaps not so much the supporters that gives them the edge but the comfort of playing at their own stadium.
Newcastle will still be a strong outfit despite making some changes but it's difficult to look past Newport's huge price considering their track record of upsets. Bruce may view it as a realistic chance for silverware and they'd have an easier passage if it was any other League Two club; Newport aren't a normal League Two side though.
Value elsewhere comes in taking Tristan Abrahams to score anytime at best odds of 10/3. The striker has three goals in three Carabao Cup games this season while there have been two goals and an assist in League Two. Against a changed Newcastle back line, Abrahams can strike again.
It's set to be a fascinating game as we adjust to the new normal of 17:30 kick-offs but Newcastle's 2/5 price is just far too short considering Newport's record against bigger teams. It could be another memorable evening for the Welsh side.
Score prediction: Newport 2-1 Newcastle (Sky Bet odds: 22/1)
