Jose Mourinho backs Frank Lampard: Former Stamford Bridge boss backs former player ahead of Chelsea v Liverpool

Jose Mourinho is confident Chelsea club legend Frank Lampard has what it takes to be a success as manager at Stamford Bridge, as he gears up for a Super Sunday test against Liverpool.

Lampard has already faced Jurgen Klopp’s side once, where Chelsea matched the Reds in the EUFA Super Cup before losing out on penalties.

Now Lampard will sample the biggest game of his short managerial career at Stamford Bridge with bitter rivals Liverpool arriving as the Premier League leaders who have so far won all five of their league meetings.

It represents a huge challenge for Lampard, but Mourinho, who says Lampard is among the best players ever to play for him and for Chelsea, has all the attributes needed to succeed.

"One thing is a player, one thing is a manager, and as a player he’s one of the top five most important players in Chelsea’s history," said Mourinho. "Frank is one of my best players, for sure, the best professional, one of the most honest guys I have ever managed in my career.

“His managerial career is another thing, he’s had one year of experience in Derby where he showed good qualities. Now he has Chelsea in his hands, he plays for big things, he plays in the Champions League and he’s already played in the Super Cup.

“Now he just has to grow his level of experience which I believe he can because he has huge experience, football has always been in his life, he’s born the son of a player, he’s become a top player and he’s got all the conditions to succeed."

Jose Mourinho was speaking at a LaLiga/LiveScore event in Madrid.
