Last season at a glance

In two words, glorious failure. It's hard to fault them after their points tally and losing just once and sometimes you just have to take your hat off to the opposition, and Manchester City were, again, magnificent. If the Reds would have got something from their trip to the Etihad in January things may well have been different, but at least the Champions League went their way and back-to-back finals in Europe and a record-breaking runners-up spot in the Premier League still represents a decent return. Not winning the league though still really hurt them.

Big questions for 2019/20

Can the Reds repeat? We know Manchester City now, they've got 100 and 98 points in consecutive seasons and they've broken their transfer record again to bolster a squad weakened somewhat by Vincent Kompany's departure, but can Liverpool match their 97-point return from last season? It's a huge ask but one which you feel they may need to accomplish to have any chance of finally taking the title.

They've not lost any ken men, but haven't brought anyone in of note either, so expect a similar starting XI to last season. Jurgen Klopp will be hoping having the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Adam Lallana and Joe Gomez all fully fit will be like having new signings, while Fabinho and Naby Keita should come on after a first full season under their belts.

Fatigue factor for front three? Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane all had massive seasons, in production but also in terms of length as well. All three played in the World Cup in Russia then went all the way to the Champions League final on June 1, before then all heading to play in another international tournament in the Copa America and African Cup of Nations.

Mane and Firmino both got the finals of their respective tournaments, and with Liverpool having a Community Shield and European Super Cup to play the start of their new season is packed. With their three front men having been on the go for a full year there must be huge concerns for their fitness and possible injury worries heading into the new season. With Daniel Sturridge gone there is only really Divock Origi as a recognised replacement, which could mean that youngsters Rhian Brewster, Harry Wilson and Ben Woodburn may get playing time.

Star Man - Virgil van Dijk

What an impact the Dutchman has made at Anfield, after arriving with a hefty price tag that raised eyebrows almost everywhere, he's made the critics eat their words and is now odds-on favourite to claim the Ballon d'Or after leading the Reds to Champions League glory with a Man of the Match display in Madrid.

Van Dijk has become a larger-than-life character and although the aura surrounding him may be a bit over-the-top, it's all helped to create the narrative that he simply can't be beaten (with the stat about a lack of players taking him on helping) leading opposition teams to plan to attack anywhere else but at Van Dijk. What is in no doubt, however, is his importance to Liverpool and for them to be successful he has to be fit for most of the season.

The above Tweet is possibly enough to sum up Jurgen Klopp, who seems to be everybody's favourite manager in the Premier League - and certainly one of the most charismatic! Behind the jokes and the hugs is much more though, as last season proved when he went toe-to-toe with Pep Guardiola and came up just one point short. He's assembled a great squad with a seemingly brilliant team spirit - and finally got the monkey off his back by claiming his first trophy at Liverpool, and it was the big one with the Champions League making its way back to Merseyside for the sixth time.

He has, though, got another huge task this coming season as he well knows the club is desperate to be champions of England again - he proved he can handle the pressure down the stretch last year, but can he somehow mastermind a title victory?
