Billy Gilmour: Chelsea boss Frank Lampard backs young Blues midfielder for great things

Frank Lampard is predicting big things for Billy Gilmour after the Chelsea teenager made an instant impact when given his chance at Stamford Bridge.

Young Scot Gilmour produced two superb displays against Liverpool in the FA Cup and Everton on his Premier League debut to get his senior Chelsea career off to a flying start.

Gilmour was so good that even Roy Keane lavished him with praise after he produced midfield displays filled with maturity and an awareness rarely seen in one so young.

And his Blues manager thinks Gilmour can go right to the top of the game if he continues his promising start.

“We’ve had a few lads come through this year and they’re great to work with, they’re like sponges, they want to come in and they want to learn,” Lampard said on Sky Sports’ Football Show.

“Billy has probably given me as much pleasure as anyone because when you look at him he’s quite slight in stature, he’s quiet, he’s polite and he’s young, but you should see him train day to day.

“Billy moved over to the first team building a while ago, he just had to because he trained at such a level if you have a possession a game, whatever, he has such a good attitude and does the basics so well.

“It can get a bit lost in modern day can you do the basics right and Billy does them day in day out. People think I threw him in a bit against Liverpool but he probably should’ve played a little bit earlier given how he was training.

“That was me being a bit conservative with him but the minute he got in there he went and did it against Liverpool, the best team in the country, so he’s set a benchmark he’s now got to try and match when we come back from this break.

“I just hope now that Billy will go on and have the career that we think he should have and I’m sure he will as he’s really talented and has everything needed for a midfield player.”
