Jurgen Klopp: Reds boss wants Liverpool Premier League title parade to be held whenever public health allows

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool will hold a belated Premier League title parade around the city, even if it has to be staged in the middle of next season.

When Premier League football returns on June 17, the Reds need just six points to claim their first title in 30 years - even less if Man City fail to win all of their remaining games.

With their huge 25-point lead at the top, Liverpool could even claim the Premier League title at the first attempt, as if Arsenal beat Man City in Wednesday's game in hand then a win over Merseyside derby rivals Everton will get the job done.

That would ordinarily be a monumental occasion both inside Goodison Park and across the city, but the coronavirus crisis means that fans will not be able to see their team finally end their long title drought.

It's not the way Klopp or any Liverpool fan would want to see it happen, especially after a record-breaking season was interrupted, but the manager still wants to see a 'crazy' open-top bus celebration around the city. Whenever public health means that it is possible.

“That you can’t celebrate in the way you’ve always dreamed of, that’s not nice, I totally understand that,” Klopp told Sky Germany. “I feel the same way. It’s not that my ideal is to celebrate alone in the stadium, then just drive home.

“It wasn’t like that when you thought about it. But that cannot be changed now. Why should we now make a big deal about something that can’t be changed?

“When someone has found the vaccine, when someone has found a solution to the problem, when infection rates are zero or below – that day will come eventually. Then we have the right to celebrate what we want to celebrate.

“If this is the 12th or 13th matchday of next season and we want to celebrate it – who is going to stop it?

“Then we still have the trophy and then we can drive it around town and stand on the bus. If other people then think that we are completely crazy, I honestly don’t care.”

Fans packed out the streets of Liverpool to celebrate their Champions League success last year, but the Premier League is the one they all wanted and that title parade, whenever that takes place, will be some occasion.
