Manchester United transfer news: Borussia Dortmund sign striker Erling Haaland from Red Bull Salzburg

Manchester United have missed out on signing superstar striker Erling Haaland after the teenager agreed a deal to join Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.

The 19-year-old made a huge impact in Salzburg's Champions League campaign when scoring eight goals and proving to be among the most prolific strikers in Europe's top competition.

Haaland ensured Salzburg pushed defending champions Liverpool all the way, but he'll now be plying his trade in the German Bundesliga after signing a deal to keep him at Dortmund until 2024.

He told the club's website: "There was a feeling right from the start that I absolutely wanted to switch to this club, go this route and play football in this incredible atmosphere."

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer previously managed Haaland at Molde and was keen to link up with the teenager again after he bagged 28 goals in just 22 games in all competitions this season.

Old Trafford chief Ed Woodward had reportedly promised Solskjaer that he could sign Haaland in January, while the manager was even thought to have visited with Haaland in Austria to try and persuade him to move to Manchester in the upcoming window.

Italian giants Juventus have also been credited with an interest but it is the German side who have won the hotly-run race for his signature.
