Chelsea transfer news: Kai Havertz signs from Bayer Leverkusen for £71m to join Timo Werner & Hakim Ziyech at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea have completed the signing of Germany international Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee of £71m.

The 21-year-old playmaker has signed a five-year deal at Stamford Bridge to add yet another quality attacking player to Frank Lampard's squad for the new season.

Havertz scored 36 goals and clocked up 25 assists in 118 Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen, and has been a top target for the Blues all summer.

He now joins Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech at the club as fellow new attacking recruits, while Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell have come in to bolster Chelsea's defence.

“I am very happy and proud to be here,” Havertz told the club’s website.

“For me it is a dream come true to play in a big club like Chelsea and I can’t wait to meet all the players and the trainers. Yeah, I am very happy to be here!”

Havertz left the Germany Nations League squad on Friday to complete his move to Chelsea after Leverkusen finally allowed him to seal his move.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia was delighted with Chelsea's latest addition, saying: “Kai is one of the best players of his age in world football, so we are very happy that his future lies at Chelsea.

“He has proven pedigree in one of the best leagues in Europe, he plays for the German national side and he is an exciting, dynamic talent.

“We are delighted to be able to add his versatility and quality to the squad before the season begins.”

It's another fine piece of business for Chelsea, who looked like they would have to splash out close to £100m to sign Havertz but have now got him for £1m less than their club record signing Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Roman Abramovich has decided to go big this summer in the transfer window, spending over £200m while almost every other club is having to cut down on costs due to the coronavirus pandemic.

France Under-21 defender Malang Sarr, who has also arrived this summer, could be heading in the opposite direction to Havertz having reportedly been offered as a loan signing as part of the deal.
