Petr Cech puts in Man of the Match performance on ice hockey debut for Guildford Phoenix

Petr Cech's competitive ice hockey debut ended in victory as Guildford Phoenix beat Swindon Wildcats 2 on Sunday evening.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea goalkeeper was handed the start in his first game since signing for the NIHL 2 club last week.

His performance not only helped his side earn victory, but the netminder was also named as Guildford's Man of the Match.

Nothing separated the two sides during 65 minutes of regulation and overtime so penalties were required to decide the winner with the scoreline level at 2-2.

The Wildcats scored two of their five penalty attempts, with their first effort denied by Cech, as he backstopped the Phoenix to their third victory of the season to maintain their 100% start.

On his decision to start playing, Cech recently told the club's website: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to play with the Phoenix to get the match experience.

"I hope I can help this young team to achieve their goals for the season and try to win as many games as possible when I have the chance to play.

"After 20 years of professional football this is going to be a wonderful experience for me to play the game I loved to watch and play as a kid."

Cech won four Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, the Champions League and the Europa League during his Chelsea career, with a further FA Cup success coming at Arsenal.

He holds the record for the most clean sheets in the Premier League. Guildford play in the fourth tier of British ice hockey's system.
