Edinson Cavani: Will PSG striker move to Manchester United or Tottenham in January?

PSG sporting director Leonardo has revealed that striker Edinson Cavani has handed in a transfer request.

The Uruguayan forward's contract expires in the summer but Cavani would prefer to leave during the January transfer window.

"We've always said the same thing," Leonardo stated after their cup win at Lorient on Sunday.

"We were hoping he would stay with the club, but today (Sunday) he asked to leave. We're studying the situation."

LaLiga side Atletico Madrid have already expressed an interest in securing his signature this month.

"It's also true that there has been an approach from Atletico Madrid," he continued.

"But that proposal was not commensurate with the player's value."

The 32-year-old joined the French champions from Italian club Napoli for a £55m fee in 2013 and has scored 198 goals in 293 appearances.

Where could Cavani move to this month? Using odds from Sky Bet, we look at some of the potential destinations.

Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid celebrate a goal against Eibar

The obvious favourites in the market after it was confirmed that they have already made an approach to PSG.

The Spanish side spent big in the summer as they replaced Antoine Griezmann, who departed for Barcelona, with Portuguese wonderkid Joao Felix.

They also have Alvaro Morata in their ranks alongside Diego Costa - although the former Chelsea man is currently sidelined through injury.

Despite those options, goalscoring has been an issue for Diego Simeone's men with Morata leading the charts with seven. Below that is Angel Correa on three while Costa and Felix currently have two each.

Only Bilbao have scored fewer goals out of LaLiga's current top 13 teams, and with a Champions League meeting against Liverpool coming up, they will be eager to add more firepower to their ranks before the window closes.

Manchester United

Sky Bet odds: 4/1

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

There was movement in the odds for Manchester United when the news of a transfer request broke and United could use a forward like Cavani at the moment.

Marcus Rashford is set to miss the next two to three months through injury - but they do have Anthony Martial and the promising Mason Greenwood to call upon.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men are in real danger of missing out on a Champions League spot once again though and will understand the importance of the next 15 Premier League games.

They also have the possibility of winning the Europa League, alongside potential FA Cup success, so there are trophies still available to them in the latter part of the current campaign.

A cheap deal for Cavani could provide appeal, although Ed Woodward's record with transfers suggests that this one might not get done before the conclusion of the window.

Tottenham

Sky Bet odds: 16/1

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho

A destination where Cavani is likely to hold a starting spot given the lengthy injury to Harry Kane.

The biggest issue with a potential move to Tottenham is the wages he will demand. PSG's riches are no secret and that reflects in the salaries they pay to the players.

Spurs are strict when it comes to the wage bill and that has caused issues in recent times with some of their star players. Christian Eriksen's contract situation has seen him set to leave the club this month.

Cavani will likely have to take a slight pay cut wherever he moves to but even then, it's hard to see Spurs forking out a decent six-figure a week sum to bring the experienced striker to their club.

That said, they've now got the big-name manager to go with an impressive new stadium. Tottenham need world class names to match.

Chelsea

Sky Bet odds: 25/1

Chelsea's Jorginho celebrates with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Tammy Abraham

Chelsea are free to spend once again after their transfer ban was brought to an end.

It has been a quiet month for Frank Lampard's men though and the striker department is one area of the pitch that could be pointed at with a view of needing improvement.

Tammy Abraham has been in fine form but it's the depth beyond him that has proven problematic. Michy Batshuayi has been involved more but has managed just one Premier League goal this season while Olivier Giroud has been told he can leave.

The Blues have started to look to youth now, aided by the appointment of Lampard, but Cavani could provide an experienced head at the top-end of the pitch.

With the FA Cup and Champions League still a possibility, alongside a battle to secure their top-four spot, Chelsea would likely welcome some reinforcements before the conclusion of the window.
