Jose De Sousa had a night he will never forget as he hit a stunning nine-dart finish on his way to first round victory on day one of the European Championship.

The Portuguese, making his debut in the tournament, beat Jeffrey de Zwaan 6-3 in their first round tie in Oberhausen.

His big moment came in leg two as he scored 180 and 177 before taking out 144, pausing to size up his final dart at double 12 before hitting the bed to achieve perfection for the first time in a televised event.

"It is amazing to hit my first 9-darter on the television. This feeling is very special but it is more important to win," said De Sousa.
