European Darts Matchplay: Defending champion James Wade crashes out to Kyle Anderson

Defending champion James Wade is out of the HappyBet European Darts Matchplay after a 6-2 second-round defeat to Kyle Anderson.

The Machine was well below his usual standards at the edel-optics.de Arena in Hamburg, averaging just 71.73 despite hitting both of his only attempts at doubles.

His Australian opponent was hardly firing on all cylinders either with an average of 87.35 but was fortunate to catch the 10th seed on an off day.

There were no such problems for top seed Michael van Gerwen, who brushed aside John Henderson 6-2 with the performance of the day.

Fresh from winning the World Cup of Darts with Raymond van Barneveld, the world number one averaged 107, landed 46% of his double attemps and sealed victory with a checkout of 128 for a 12-dart leg.

Peter Wright's impressive form continued as he thrashed Greece's John Michael 6-0 to storm into the third round.

The UK Open champion, who has won three European Tour events this season, averaged 101 and landing 42% of his doubles while his opponent was restricted to just two attempts at a finish.

Kim Huybrechts, Jelle Klaasen, Simon Whitlock and Benito van de Pas were the other seeded players to suffer elimination.

Peter Hudson won four straight legs to defeat Huybrechts 6-5, Stephen Bunting ousted Klaasen 6-2, Andy Hamilton beat Whitlock 6-1 and Vincent van der Voort edged out van de Pas 6-5.

Dave Chisnall booked his place in the third as he beat James Wilson 6-4, while Mensur Suljovic survived a scare as he clinched three legs in succession to beat Dirk van Duijvenbode 6-5.

During the afternoon session, Mervyn King missed double 12 for a nine-dart finish as he beat Richard North 6-2.

Michael Smith, who won the last European Tour event in Gibraltar, looked in fine form as he brushed aside Mike De Decker 6-1, averaging just under 100 in the process.

Joe Cullen also looked in good form as he brushed aside Justin Pipe 6-2, Spain's Cristo Reyes was forced to dig deep as he beat Nathan Aspinall 6-5, while Daryl Gurney progressed at the expense of Jimmy Hendriks and Alan Norris beat Marko Kantele.

Ian White also booked his place in the third round as he edged out Peter Jacques 6-3.
