Michael Smith (11/10) v Simon Whitlock (7/4), draw 3/1

  • Head-to-head: 5-6

It's all pretty funny and crazy that the first match of a historic night in Berlin are the table toppers! When they set these fixtures out they probably weren't thinking that would be the case.

I have a feeling that Simon Whitlock will thrive on that Berlin stage and maybe get the job done.

He's been the more surprising of the two as he winning against bigger odds and keeps chugging along when opponents are below par like Barney last week.

Simon won his major title - the European Championship - in Germany and he can feed off his experience.

Neither player had a great weekend so there's not much to read into there, while the head-to-head record is in Simon's favour.

At 7/4 he's an attractive proposition but I'm not advising a heavy bet because I fully respect how good Michael has been.

Gerwyn Price (7/4) v Mensur Suljovic (11/10), 3/1

  • Head to head: 7-2

Gerwyn Price is grinding away and making the most of what he has but we have to remember how new to this scene he is.

We often talk about Rob Cross' remarkable journey in a short space of time and while Gerwyn's rise hasn't been as high or as fast, it has been a short romance that he's had with the game.

He's still learning and getting better.

For Mensur, this is basically his home fixture and there's a lot of pressure on him.

He skipped another weekend of events and I don't know if he remembers winning a match.

He'll have the support, yes, but when things aren't going well you can often feel the heat because of it.

So I'm going with Gerwyn here at 7/4 but the 5/1 Price Boosted match treble (Price to win, hit most 180s and have the highest checkout) also has appeal.

Gerwyn is a good scorer with the 180s and although the high checkout part is a little iffy but if he wins the match then he'll have more outs.

Michael van Gerwen (1/5) v Daryl Gurney (8/1), draw 6/1

  • Head-to-head: 11-2

It's all MVG for me. Daryl's wheels are spinning after a poor start and a difficult weekend while van Gerwen won both events.

Germany isn't obviously MVG's home but it is Europe and he does particularly well on those stages in front of big audiences.

It all points to Michael.

The 2/1 match treble for him to win, have the most 180s and highest checkout makes a lot of sense to me given his qualities and seems very solid.

Rob Cross (4/5) v Raymond van Barneveld (5/2), 3/1

  • Head-to-head: 3-0

Rob Cross seems to be moving in the right direction back towards where he was last season although he's finding out about the demands that are part of being part of the Premier League.

Raymond van Barneveld will relish being part of a big European stage again and it will be interesting to see how Rob handles an intimidating atmosphere which won't be too dissimilar to the opening night in Dublin, when MVG walloped him.

Was the big crowd a factor in that performance or was it just brilliance from MVG?

That said Rob has done well in some of the European Tour events on the continent and crucially he'll be able to draw on the confidence of never losing to Raymond. He's beaten him three times.

I'm going to back Cross at almost even-money but I also like the medium Player Performance bet at 9/2 which needs him to win, 3.5 180s and over 106.5 checkout.

To be that sounds pretty achievable if Rob plays his game.

Peter Wright (15/8) v Gary Anderson (1/1), draw 3/1

  • Head-to-head: 13-23

The last time these two played was the great capitulation of Gary Anderson in the Grand Slam of Darts semi-finals.

Peter Wright somehow came back from 14-8 down to win 16-15 on a night where we saw the Anderson injury perhaps becoming an issue in his game.

But I think Anderson is going to put it right. That will still be burning inside.

Gary doesn't like to be upstaged, belittled or made to feel the fool and maybe he felt all three on that occasion - so he'll be extremely determined to put that right.

It was an uncharacteristically poor weekend for Peter, who is always so consistent, while I'm not put off by Gary's performances because he's more of an occasion player.

Peter does love Europe having won six tournaments in Germany last year but when they're both on form, Gary tends to get to the finish line first and I'm going to stick with that trend.

MVG and Anderson have been Peter's roadblocks more so than anyone else in recent years so having beaten MVG a fortnight ago will help. But nevertheless I think backing Gary at even-money is pretty good value.

There's a Price Boosted match treble at 4/1 which I also like - especially how he looked against MVG in defeat last week.
