Daryl Gurney produced a major upset when he dumped two-time world champion Gary Anderson out of the World Matchplay in Blackpool on Tuesday. 

Gurney, the 80/1 outright tip of our darts expert Chris Hammer, produced some high-quality darts to beat the 'Flying Scotsman' 11-9 and secure a quarter-final tie against Mensur Suljovic. He is now just 16/1 with Sky Bet to win the title.

The Northern Irishman, who trailed 3-0 early on, averaged 103, on his way to a famous victory, in only his second appearance at the Winter Gardens.

A delighted Gurney said: "I play darts to play in games like that and I'm over the moon. It was going to take a big performance to beat Gary and I know I played well.

"I'm very happy with the way I coped under the pressure. I'm glad I won that game but I'm here to win and hopefully I can do the same in the next game and progress even further."

He will meet Mensur Suljovic in the last eight after the Austrian's 11-6 victory over Justin Pipe.

Suljovic, who averaged 95.5, dominated from the off and eased through with a convincing display.   

He never trailed in the match, and despite some shaky moments late on managed to get the job done, finishing with double 16.

"I'm delighted and it is fantastic," said Suljovic. "I'm very happy to have beaten Justin and my finishing was super. I'm very focused and enjoying it, and I'm excited to be in the quarter-finals."

A win for Gurney would esnure profits for our tipster as he also tipped Gurney to win his quarter at 10/1.

Darren Webster joined Suljovic and Gurney in the last eight with a 11-7 victory over Steve West was was delighted with his performance.

"It's a massive win and I'm really happy," said Webster. "It took me a while to get going, but when I got into my flow my finishes were going in.

"I watched my first round game back and I was rushing my last dart, so I was trying to be more steady and control that.

"I think in my last four TV events I've made two last 16s, a semi-final and a quarter-final, so I'm starting to do it now. I don't feel comfortable yet but I'm learning all the time."

Both players traded blows early on, but with the score 4-4 Webster finished on double 12 and never looked back.

Webster extended his lead and in the 13th game wrapped things up with a brilliant 120 checkout.

He bettered that with a 133 checkout to go 10-6 ahead, but West responded with a 121 finish to close the gap to three games.

However, Webster finished things off with a double eight checkout and will meet Peter Wright in the next round.

The world No 3 eased through with an emphatic 11-4 victory over Cristo Reyes and was immediately installed as the 100/30 second-favourite with the Leeds-based bookmaker to win the title.

Wright was in brilliant form with a 79 per cent record on the doubles, three 180s and averaged 104, the highest in the tournament so far.

Michael van Gerwen remains the 4/9 favourite to secure his third World Matchplay title.
