Catching Pigeons gossip column for Newbury on Saturday

Our gossip column is back with the best bets for Newbury on Saturday and a fancy at Doncaster on Sunday too.

3.00 Newbury Thyme Hill

Thyme Hill can see off the challenge of The Cashel Man and win the Betway Challow Hurdle at Newbury on Saturday. Philip Hobbs' gelding looked a cracking prospect last season when he ended the campaign with a close third in the Festival Bumper at Cheltenham and has been impressive in recording a 100 per-cent start over hurdles at Chepstow and Cheltenham so far this term. The form of his latest win in a Grade Two at Prestbury Park looks very solid and gives him a clear chance in what looks another very good renewal of this prize

1240 Newbury - Mister Coffey

Mister Coffey is just preferred to On To Victory in the Betway Introductory Hurdle. There was strong confidence from the Harry Whittington team when this four-year-old made his debut in a bumper at Wincanton in the spring and he fairly whizzed home in what, admittedly, was a low-key affair. He was bought by the Bamfords and sent to the neighbouring Henderson camp last mont and looks a very useful prospect.

3.35 Newbury - Morning Vicar

Morning Vicar, a stablemate of Mister Coffey, looks worth an interest in the Betway Novices Handicap Chase. A talented novice hurdler last season, he has always looked the type to do better over fences and starts his career over the larger obstacles at the right end of the handicap.

1.50 Newbury - One For Rosie

One For Rosie was a very consistent performer in novice events last season and can see off a very good field in the Betway Heed Your Hunch Handicap Hurdle. A winner on his debut over the smaller obstacles at Carlisle, he doubled his tally at Warwick before running a cracker under 11st 12kb when beaten only a short head by Third Wind in the EBF Final at Sandown in March. That winner boosted the form when scoring at Wincanton on Boxing Day and the third Champagne Well has also performed with credit at Grade Two level this season. One For Rosie looks open to plenty of improvement and can be expected to be fit enough to do himself justice, despite his late start to the campaign.

1.30 Leicester - Tricomalee

Tricomalee can land a well-deserved first success over timber in the Tap 'N' Shower Novices Hurdle at Leicester. A winner of a bumper at Warwick in May, the son of Malinas has been set two fairly stiff tasks so far this season. He looked a little unlucky not to prevail at Sandown last month when he may have gone to the front a little too soon and then came up against the highly rated Son Of Camas and King Roland at Newbury and was beaten two-and-a-quarter lengths after looking a real threat at the last. This looks easier.

1.00 Lingfield - Corvair

Best bet on the flat at Lingfield could be Simon Crisford's Corvair in the Ladbrokes Novices Stakes. Second on each of his two runs so far over, he has been working very well since finishing only a neck second to subsequent Newcastle winner Splendidly on the same course a month ago. The return to seven furlongs should suit here.

1.35 Doncaster (Sunday) - La Bague Au Roi

La Bague Au Roi put a dismal comeback effort behind her with a good run last time and is the pick in a fascinating Mansionbet At Doncaster Yorkshire Silver Vase Mares Chase. Although it was a little below her high level form of last season, she was beaten only three lengths by Top Notch in the Peterborough Chase at Huntingdon and should also improve for this return to a left-handed, galloping course.
